IX.Terms

The rules of the road, short and plain.

These are the terms of using pgen — what you can do with it, what we promise, what we don't, and how either of us can walk away. Plain language where possible; the rest is here because it has to be.

The short version

pgen is a desktop application built by TRAGEN. You can download it, install it, run it against any Postgres database you have permission to use, and keep using it as long as you follow these terms.

pgen is free for personal and commercial use. It’s closed-source — you get the binary, not the code. Your data, your queries, and your connection details stay on your machine.

We provide pgen as-is. We try hard to make it stable and correct, but you’re the one running it against your data, and you’re responsible for what you do with it.

Using pgen

Your license

We grant you a personal, worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to download, install, and use pgen on devices you own or control, for personal or internal business use.

You don’t need an account, a key, or a subscription. Just download it and use it.

This license doesn’t let you redistribute pgen, repackage it, sublicense it, reverse-engineer the binary, or strip out the TRAGEN branding. It also doesn’t transfer any intellectual-property rights to you — pgen and its source code remain ours.

Acceptable use

You agree not to use pgen to:

  • Access databases you don’t have permission to query.
  • Violate the law in your jurisdiction or anyone else’s.
  • Attack, probe, or otherwise harm infrastructure that isn’t yours.
  • Build a competing product by scraping the UI, reverse-engineering the binary, or replicating proprietary parts of pgen.

We don’t police what you do with pgen — your queries never reach us — but if we become aware of abuse, we reserve the right to revoke your license to use the software.

Bring-your-own AI keys

pgen’s AI features work by sending requests directly from your machine to the AI provider whose key you’ve configured (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.). We don’t proxy these requests and we don’t see their contents.

You’re responsible for: (a) keeping your API keys safe, (b) the costs your provider charges you, and (c) following the AI provider’s own terms of service. If you send something to your AI that you shouldn’t have, that’s between you and them.

Updates & auto-update

pgen checks for updates on launch and can install them in the background. You can turn auto-update off in Settings. We may push updates that fix bugs, add features, change features, or retire features that didn’t work out.

We’ll publish material changes in the changelog. We won’t silently remove a paid feature you’ve paid for.

PRO (when it ships)

The PRO tier

PRO is a future managed tier that adds cloud sync for your queries and connections, managed AI without your own key, and team sharing. It doesn’t exist yet — when it does, signing up for PRO will mean agreeing to a separate set of terms specific to the hosted service (billing, data residency, account closure, the rest).

Until PRO ships, nothing on this page applies to it. Free pgen will keep being free; PRO is purely additive.

The legal bits

No warranty

pgen is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

We don’t warrant that pgen will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will meet your specific requirements. Always back up your data before running destructive queries — the DROP is yours.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, TRAGEN will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, profits, or revenue, arising from your use of pgen — whether based on warranty, contract, tort, or any other legal theory.

Our total liability for any direct damages will not exceed the amount you have paid us for pgen in the twelve months preceding the claim. (For the free tier, that’s zero.)

Third-party software

pgen ships with a number of open-source libraries. Their licenses are reproduced inside the app under About → Open-source notices. Those licenses apply to those components.

Termination

You can stop using pgen at any time — uninstall it and you’re done. We may terminate or suspend your license to use pgen if you materially breach these terms, especially the acceptable-use section.

Termination doesn’t require notice and doesn’t entitle either party to a refund of fees already paid (which, for free pgen, is again zero).

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Israel, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute arising from these terms or from your use of pgen will be brought exclusively in the competent courts of Tel Aviv, Israel.

Changes to these terms

We’ll bump the “Last updated” date at the top of this page when anything material changes, and we’ll note the change in the changelog. Continuing to use pgen after the change means you accept the new terms; if you don’t, uninstall the app.
